What are interactive books?

Interactive books are any books that require the reader to take an active part in the storytelling process or that require the reader to perform some sort of job.

For babies and toddlers many interactive books include lift-the-flap books or touch and feel books. If you’re an adult you might remember “Choose your own adventure” books that required you to make a choice about the ending that your character will have.

In the past 10 years there have been an explosion of interactive books for kids that have come out. Some of them are typical lift-the-flap books and others have a modern twist to them.

Why are interactive books important?

Interactive books are a great way to engage in language learning because they make reading active instead of passive.

When you’re reading a book out loud to your child, your child is internally absorbing what’s happening in the story and they are passively processing the language that they are hearing. When they’re working with an interactive book, they are required to not only process the language but also act on it. This form of interaction helps to make more language connections for your child.

Since Spanish is our minority language, I’ve done a lot of searching for interactive books, because they’re a great way to boost our Spanish language learning time. Interactive books are also a lot of fun and they keep reading engaging, especially for older kids.

The best Spanish interactive books for kids

Here are some of the best Spanish interactive books that I’ve found and read with my daughter. All of the books here are ones that we have used in our home and enjoyed. Check them out!

Usborne Shine-A-Light Books

These books are a lot of fun! Our first shine-a-light book was “El Cuerpo Humano”. Each page poses a question or asks you to think about something in the human body.

You can get a sneak peak of the answer by shining a light through the back of the page and watch it illuminates part of the page that you’re on. My daughter can spend a long time curled up with these books and a flashlight!

LibroAventuras

There are tons of these books in English, usually in stacks by the door if you walk into any Barnes & Noble. Each book is hard cover and usually has about 12 pages of story or character information. Almost all of these books follow a movie or show and feature popular characters.

In the back of the book there’s a plastic cover that opens to show several small plastic figurines of characters and props from the book. Most books also include a plastic mat that you can take out, unfold and place on a hard surface to act as the ‘setting’ or a backdrop to the figurines.

The reason that we enjoy these books so much is that it encourages play using the story language that the book provides. My daughter can spend hours reenacting the story with the characters and the playmat. They’re also great interactive books to take on the go because they include playing pieces.

Usborne Sticker Books

We’ve had a lot of fun with sticker books and their popularity is definitely on the rise! While these books can be great for language learning, I’ve found that some are better than others.

We’ve enjoyed a few of the Usborne ones because they have a good paragraph of text on each page along with Spanish labels by each sticker. We tend to work on a section each day, reading the pages and adding the stickers, until we’ve finished the whole book – usually over the course of a week or so.

My daughter loves going back and rereading them and often remembers a significant amount of the Spanish vocabulary because she helped find and put the stickers in!

Presiona Aqui

This is only one a few books that Herve Tullet has written and all of them are interactive and enjoyable!

Each page of this books gives the reader instructions to turn, shake and touch the book to make the dots change. When kids turn the page, they get to see the results of their actions!

Cine en Casa

These books with projectors are super cool and engaging for kiddos. While it doesn’t augment the audio in Spanish, the projector definitely makes the whole reading and viewing process more engaging.

All of the books are around 32 pages long and each double page spread is about 2/3 illustration and 1/3 text area with a good paragraph chunk of text. It’s a great option to read aloud to your child while they work the projector.

I posted a few examples here but there are several others to choose from. Search for “cine en casa Disney” and you’ll get tons of options to choose from!

Interactive Books for Babies and Toddlers

Interactive books are also great ways to engage younger readers in books. My daughter loved all sorts of interactive books when she was a baby!

These are some of our favorite sound books for babies and toddlers. Each page has a sound button that plays a sound clip of a Spanish nursery rhyme. Some of the nursery rhymes are traditional Spanish songs like, “La Vaca Lechera” while others are translations of common English nursery rhymes like, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.

From lift-the-flap to touch-and-feel and pull-the-tab, we had them all! To read a more in-depth review, check out this article here: Interactive Board Books for Babies and Toddlers.
